Today, I ordered take out, and paid with a credit card. The cute cashier gave me the receipt to sign, and under 'tip' I gave a couple of dollars. I realized that I had given too much, crossed it out, and changed it. Unaware she was watching, She then responded, "Did you just lower the tip by $1?" FML

What does it matter if she saw you do it or not? She would have seen it crossed out in a little bit anyway. It's a weird thing that you would bother to cross it out and lower it by only a dollar, seeing as how a dollar is relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it's just weird as opposed to horrible. Plus, it was only take out, people don't normally tip on take out at all so if I were her, I'd feel grateful to have even gotten a couple dollars.

I think what he means is that he wants the waiter to make the night good by providing good service and that they should have to work for a big tip and not just expect it

Oh you crazy Americans, with your strange tipping systems.

Cashiers can get tipped? That doesn't happen in England, we only tip waiters/waitresses as far as I know.

I'm American and even I didn't know that

really? u lowered the tip in front of her. Thats like the lowest thong i have heard of and by jyst a dollar. everyone works hard for their money i am sure u do to, but u just dont do that to people. consider this lesson learned and dont do it again

a tip should never be considered manditory. it is not our fault that american employers dnt pay their employees a fair wage. where i live food service ppl make minimun wage or just over that. tipping is still common place all over, but not expected anywhere. i am so thankful i am from such a place :)

Thank you! I'm poor and waitresses always make me feel horrible If I don't tip which is stupid I m sorry your life sucks but it's not my fault you make so little and even I make very little.

I don't really get your tipping system. So is it a mandatory thing? Because it seems to be regarded as absolutely terrible when you don't tip over a certain amount over there. (I'm not criticizing at all, just curious)

Wait, you think 1 dollar more is too much?

Mmk asshole. Try being a server for a day and see how much you like getting stiffed, when this is your bill money. I make 3.67 an hour. Yes, it's a take out order, but we still took it, made sure it was right, bagged it, and cashed you out. That's service it's what a server does. And for you ***** wyou

Thank you completely agree that time could have been spent attending to tables

As a waitress I have to say she shouldn't have been watching OR commented. But having said that the government expects a waitress to be tipped enough to make up for her lack of minimum wage pay. Always tip your waitress and if you are known for not tipping don't expect good service. Everyone has bad days you don't know what they are dealing with I had to work the day my girlfriend died and was expected to be happy about it... You never know maybe the last three tables ran out on their bills just try to keep that in mind while you tip. Oh and if you eat at a hibachi place the waitress shares half her tip with the cook.
