Today, I ordered take out, and paid with a credit card. The cute cashier gave me the receipt to sign, and under 'tip' I gave a couple of dollars. I realized that I had given too much, crossed it out, and changed it. Unaware she was watching, She then responded, "Did you just lower the tip by $1?" FML

What does it matter if she saw you do it or not? She would have seen it crossed out in a little bit anyway. It's a weird thing that you would bother to cross it out and lower it by only a dollar, seeing as how a dollar is relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it's just weird as opposed to horrible. Plus, it was only take out, people don't normally tip on take out at all so if I were her, I'd feel grateful to have even gotten a couple dollars.

I think what he means is that he wants the waiter to make the night good by providing good service and that they should have to work for a big tip and not just expect it

Wow, I hate how everyone tells you you're awful for taking back that dollar, assuming you make enough to be able to afford an extra dollar here or there. It was unprofessional of her to comment on it, and honestly, I would have looked at her, crossed out the entire amount, and said, "You're right, it's just take-out." Teach her to be a bitch about it.

Proof that our tipping culture is out of control: people conveniently ignore the word "TAKE-OUT" and start spewing the same old sob story about how waitstaff only get $2/hr. and blah blah blah. That has absolutely no bearing on the story here. IT'S TAKE-OUT. There is no tipping for take-out, unless you really enjoy the restaurant and want to leave a little something or they did something for you that was above and beyond. Good gravy Marie. My opinion: give waitstaff whatever the federal minimum wage is (it'll be like $7.25 come July) and put in a rule that is in place for every other minimum-wage food service job in that they cannot accept tips. Now they're in the same boat as every other customer service schmuck out there.

Man, what is with everyone calling OP cheap? It's take-out! She didn't serve them at a table, or anything, plus it's was rude of her to comment on it. I agree with what a couple other people said; OP should have crossed out the correction and wrote "0", not been embarrassed about her noticing.

Point 1: It is take out, so, a smaller or no tip makes sense. Yes, the take out people do have to collect the food, and organize, but in almost every restaurant I know of, the at least get minimum wage, maybe even a little more, so I can understand tipping a small amount. Point 2: Very unprofessional of her to watch and comment, I see nothing wrong with what the OP did. Point 3: If everyone at the restaurant is doing their work, someone working take out will NEVER work more or harder than someone being a server. To whoever said that as take out you work more than the servers, either you are lying, or you have some REALLY shitty servers. Point 4: I graduated college, and I am working as a server and bartender at a local restaurant. I make damn good money, because I can fake genuine interest in the guests. I know LOTS of college grads who work in restaurants, either serving, or even doing take out. Why? Cause the economy is shitty, and it can be hard to find a job, even with that useless piece of paper called a diploma.

I work takeout, and agree with 161 it really is nowhere near as hard as serving. not to say that it can't be a little difficult. Anyways, people in takeout don't receive tips consistently at ALL. if someone does tip me, i am content with pretty much anything because i don't expect much, and this girl should be happy that you tipped her anything at all. for her to make a comment on the tip is COMPLETELY rude, and unfathomable to me. it's your money, and you can choose what you do with it. instances when someone in service should comment on the tip are RARE. [unless the written tip was indecipherable or something] what a little bitch. and i wouldn't be surprised if it was my coworker, really. she's "cute" and a bitch, too. if you were at a rib restaurant...in anaheim...then i pity you.

really though, to people who made comments like #14...no it is not rocket science, but we do a LOT more than you think. i don't think people realize that.

Is the cashier really that desperate for only one dollar more?

Since when do you tip for picking a bag off of a counter? She's lucky to get anything.
