Today, I overheard my 14-year-old daughter telling her friend that she's saving money to get her hymen surgically removed so her first time won't hurt. FML

Because the surgery won't hurt afterwards...

Time to have the talk with your daughter... And if that doesn't work, tell her that all surgeries like that require the doctors to get permission from parents no matter the age, and that she's going to have to wait for some years to come until she came have her first time.

You know that the teen pregnancy rate has been declining over the past few decades, right?

I think she may just be neurotic about the pain. That doesn't need to be the driving force in her life.

Why do surgery? A couple of 40 oz malt liquors will dull the pain quite nicely and are much cheaper.

You NEED to tell your child how her body actually works. The hymen stretches. It doesn't break, it doesn't go away. I am so sick and goddamn tired of listening to people talk about female sexuality who are utterly ignorant.

Preach. It's scary how readily misinformation is accepted as the truth when a little research can go a long way.

You just undermined your own argument. I am aware that it is due to contraception use. You said that if we didn't talk about sex as much, we would have fewer teen pregnancies than we do now. But if teens didn't have any sex ed they wouldn't know about contraception and wouldn't be able to prevent these pregnancies. Or do you seriously think that if we didn't talk about sex nobody would know what it was and wouldn't do it? Early humans didn't have sex ed, and they still figured it out. Not talking about sex ed won't return us to the "good old days" that you seem to think exist. There were no good old days. Everyone just hushed everything up and shamed the girl involved without actually solving the problem.

But...god told them what to do so they didn't need to "figure it out" so in a way they got sex ed

All these comments about her being too young to think about sex.... She's 14 soo I'm guessing she's 8th grade/freshman? Schools give the sex talk in 7th grade.... It's hard not to think about it at that age.

14 is NOT A CHILD. If you think a teenager isn't going to have sex if you don't teach them about it you are sadly mistaken! Teenagers have been having sex for a very long time. It was just hidden in the past and the babies were shipped off to be adopted causing untold grief to the mothers. Get a grip! Education is the key! I took my daughter to the doctor this week to get contraception as she has her first boyfriend. She hasn't had sex with him, but when she chooses to, at least I will know she is protected.

I lost my virginity at 14 and I got the talk when I was 8. Teenagers will make their own choices.

Not all women are born with one, and it can get popped from doing something as simple as riding a bike.

Hymens don't "pop" or "break" or "tear". It's actually very inconsequential to the ******.
