Today, I put the little boy I nanny for in time-out. In retaliation he blasted an air horn in my face. I can only hear out of one ear now. FML

Ive had that happen to me, except I was 10 and was standing next to an amplifier while my principle, with his deep voice, yelled at the students. But my hearing came back, so nothing to worry about. :)

It's principal...because the principal is your pal. :)

Timeouts are the stupidest means of discipline I have ever come across. I babysit and I can attest to the fact that they accomplish all of nothing. If your employer doesn't mind, I'd suggest a flick to the nose next time. Not painful, but it seems to work on small children. FYL op, I hope you get your hearing back.

You're wrong. There are certain situations where a time-out is useful, such as when the kid is being annoying, but not bad enough for a beating. Sure, sometimes corporal punishment is called for, but other times a time-out can fix a problem without violence. You've got to have the wisdom to use the right tool for the job.

Yeah, because a flick on the nose is a beating. I agree that not everything warrants a pop to the back of the head, but out of all the ways to punish a child, I've found time outs have worked zero times. If it does, I'll be sure to eat my hat.

Then you must not be doing time out correctly. I am a nanny and have been for quite a few years. I have 14 years of child care experience, and time outs have almost always been the most effective form of discipline, in my experience. I don't see what any kind of spanking or hitting does for a child, other than make them scared of you. When my husband was younger his mom hit him with a wooden spoon on the butt so hard that she broke it in half. To this day he can't remember why she did it, but he will tell you that he was afraid of her so he obeyed. That is horrible parenting I you ask me.

#98, 129, I walk the middle road between you two. Time-outs can and do work, (may I offer you some Jalapeño Hat Sauce, #98?), but sometimes, a little smack is the right thing. If you need to resort to violence frequently, either(ee) you or the child is ****** up, most likely both of you.

A wooden spoon? Oh geez... >.> And perdix, I wasn't aware they made it in jalapeño.. I'll have to try that. But you see, I punish them with something far more cruel than time outs or wooden spoons... I make them read...ALOUD. *thunder crash* they hate that, but every book we read I get an additional 5 bucks so it's fine by me. Perhaps I'll give time outs another go. I thank thee both. *bows* adieu.

*re-reads comment* Yep, a wooden spoon. That's what I said.

One more wrong move on your part and you could be that cool, deaf guy like Beethoven. If you have permanent hearing damage, sue the parents' pants off. Kids should have access to such dangerous things. When lawyers find out these assholes are rich enough to hire a nanny, they'll salivate and happily take your case.

that sucks. time like these wish you could spank other people kids lol. for real though kids these days are not behaved at all.

Little deviant, hoping for a spanking from the babysitter? Kinky.

I wouldn't go as far as that. The kid is probably not disciplined enough.

Kids these days to be spanked more than ever, because they know they can get away with shit. There's a huge difference between discipline and abuse. I got spanked quite often when I was a kid and now I'm an angel

WolfGirlRin 12

Because of the current laws in place, any form of spanking can be called out as child abuse. It's bullshit.

Not true. In my country you can legally spank your children but there are rules such as Open handed Not on the face Reasonable force After calming down Never though I disagree that it's a good form of discipline
