Today, I received a $105 parking ticket for being in a handicapped space. The lines were covered by snow, and the sign was on the building twenty feet away. FML

Take good pictures and challenge the ticket.

I would challenge the ticket ther etoo. There are often close parking spots that are non-handicap. For example, maybe the first "row" of cars holds four handicap spots and the fifth one was for the general public. Not knowing that because of the snow was not your fault, you made a reasonable assumption That, and if a person who had a disability had to park on snow like that, they could have fallen on their ass. Definitely challenge the ticket and bring up the fact they weren't keeping it safe to begin with. Good luck!

Twenty feet away on a building? That doesn't really make sense. That might not be a long distance to walk, but I don't know anyone who would think to look there for a handicap parking sign. I agree with the previous posters who said to take pictures and fight the ticket. Any reasonably judge should see that you didn't intend to break the law and couldn't tell it was a handicap spot.

The argument would probably not hold up in court, though. Most judges hold that ignorance of the law or knowledge after the fact is no excuse. The poster acknowledges that there was indeed a sign posted on the wall. I saw a case pretty much exactly like this the other day on a court show on TV. They lost...there was a secondary warning of a restricted space, other than the sign painted onto the parking spot itself.

The sign was directly in the line of site. Not paying attention is not a reasonable excuse in a court of law.

If he lived in America, there wouldn't be snow right now.

the sign is never on the building unless the spot is right up on the building and handycap spot won't be 20ft from the building ....ur a bad lier

are you stupid? This is the exact reason the person posted the FML... the sign was in a stupid spot.

Did you think the sign on the building was for the people parking on the sidewalk?

you shouuldnt have got it, but since you did that sucks!

Don't know what you are up against without seeing it. I got busted once in a similar manner. Snow on the ground covering the paint and the sign was on the eaves of the building 15 feet in the air due to the fact that the store front was all glass. I fought it and won. Had to drive the 80 miles back to that town to do so but it was still cheaper than the $250 ticket.
