Today, I returned home to find out that my new and very expensive computer had overheated. I confronted my mom, and she told me that she had covered up the fan because she didn't like the noise. FML

lmfao, its more FHL.....unless she refuses to pay for it.

Aww man. That sucks. I hope your mom is going to help pay for a new computer.

If the computer is custom you might try to spring for a better case, and if it's not custom then maybe try replacing the stock fan with something better. I've heard rumors that some Intel processors like the i7 have issues with the stock fan.

Did she know tht it could go on fire

lol.. that sucks...but you don't have to be tech savvy to realize fans cool things...What did your mom think it was doing?!

macs dont over-heat? anyone with a mac try wrapping it in towels for an hour and then see how great your mac is if youre so sure and computers usually switch off when they get to a certain temperature. if its "new and very expensive" anyway. and if your computers too loud get a new fan. its really not that hard. 20 quid for a quiet computer?

#58 Um my computer is brand new and it doesn't turn off if it's risen to a certain temperature. #62 I doubt there's only that one computer in the house.

It probably does and you just don't know it. I've never had a computer where you can't set a shutdown or alarm in the bios to activate when it reaches a dangerous temperature. Hell, I can't even recall having a graphics card (Nvidia) that won't let me do that.

Whoever says u deserve it is a dumbass

yeah if that computer was so new and expensive why did you leave it on? I will admit that your mom should have shut it down rather than covering the fan but still. you have to take some responsibility for this

Because people don't run programs on their computers when they're away...

wait if it overheated then how are you able to write your FML

He turned his computer back on when the temperature came down? He has more than one computer? He broke into his neighbor's house and used his computer?

deaththekid, how many people do you know who only have one computer in their house that they just bought?

While my first thought was "FYL" because that sucks, I changed my mind to "YDI". If you turned off your computer while you weren't using it, especially if the fans are that loud, then this would not have happened.

Why don't you turn off your computer? It is not getting any use.

It might be getting use...it might be hosting a web server, an FTP server, a game server, or simply being made available for Remote Desktop or SSH. I do that with my machine at home. OP - Most modern computers, and sometimes individual components within them, have temperature sensors and will shut off before they actually incur damage when they start to overheat. Did it work again after it cooled down?
