That was an extremely bitchy comment on the mom's part. She's obviously bitter about something. Going to college and getting an education is important, but it doesn't automatically give you a free pass to a high-paying job. Plenty of people work hard to get an education and still end up in low-paying jobs. Some people are even perfectly okay with that. She had no right to judge you, especially in front of an impressionable child.
