Today, I was at a meeting. One of the other members decided to share that their cat had passed away recently. I got an uncontrollable nervous laugh, started crying because I was laughing so hard, and left the room while everyone watched in horror. FML

I understand nervous laughter and its extent because it happens to me a lot, but why in that situation....

At least they were only talking about a cat dying and not a person! FYL though, that must have been embarrassing!

This is the world we live in. The OP compounded some poor person's misery by laughing at him/her for their pet dying (whether voluntary laughter or not). And instead of feeling any remorse for doing so, the OP is saying FML as though they are a victim of something other than their own behavior.

I don't understand how people are saying the op is a horrible person. Lots of people laugh when they are nervous. It's not their fault. A friend of mine nervously laughed at a funeral one time. She couldn't control it. Sorry op hopefully you can get over the embarrassment.

Laughing is the brains defense mechanism. It's very common for people to laugh in moments of sorrow or distress. Calm down people and stop calling him heartless I'm sure it wasn't the OP's intent.

theres a lady in my dad's office who has the same problem, if you explain it to them they might understand.. we just ignore her laughs now

It's the giggle loop. It can't be stopped.
