I'm guessing it isn't your first time photographing a baby, you should know they can't balance very well, they're babies! Their head is the heaviest part of their bodies. And not to mention you should always listen to your clients, especially if is the mother, YDI for not listening to the mother, they always know best.
When I trained as a photographer for my first studio, that's one of the first rules they teach you about working with young kids or babies: never put them in a possibly dangerous pose. And, if the parent was uncomfortable enough to even ask if they should be helping to support their child, you should have listened to them. I understand sometimes mistakes happen, but even as a novice photographer, you should have known better and been more careful.
You should listen to the mother, she knows where her child is regarding how well he can hold himself up.
His mom knew better then you geez. stupid

You obviously don't know anything about kids, and gravity.
Well if he was a fairly new baby you shouldnt have expected him to be able to hold his own weight up
