Today, I was crying at my desk at work. My colleague tried to cheer me up by saying: "Don't worry, I'm sure you will find a new job soon". I didn't even know I was fired. I was crying because my cat died this morning. FML

Today, I found out my boss wrote me up because he heard me crying on the phone, and that it was unprofessional. I was talking to my sister, who was telling that me my father had died. Three weeks ago, he was crying about his dog breaking his leg. FML

Today, I was at a meeting. One of the other members decided to share that their cat had passed away recently. I got an uncontrollable nervous laugh, started crying because I was laughing so hard, and left the room while everyone watched in horror. FML

Being considerate what's nothing to do with terminating someone's employment. Most people don't like doing that job, but it has to be done. Once a decision is made to terminate someone's employment, it needs to be handled swiftly. What's happening in the person personal life can't affect the time it get done. Otherwise you'll find there's always bad days and it won't happen in a timely manner. Which is bad for everyone else and the company.

The only way I can imagine a misinterpretation is OP looking at a box with her dead cat in it and the coworker thinking she was packing her things to leave. Obviously OP wouldn't bring her dead cat to work, that violates the "no weird smells" rule.
