I'm going to agree it was just one of those times when he wasn't sure what to say and it came out wrong.. Of course a comforting hug would have probably gone over better but at least he didn't say something really retarded like "It's ok, I'll buy you another cat" ...

I'm sure he just didn't know what to say in that situation and he thought that might comfort you. It definitely wasn't the best thing to say but he was just trying to be nice. Still FYL though because I can't even imagine what I will go through when I loose my dog.
