Today, I was doing takeout orders at the restaurant I work at. I spent a long while putting together this guy's $135.00 order. When he finally got there to pick it up, I told him to fill out the credit card slip. I looked at it after he left. He gave me a 40 cent tip. FML

most people i know don't leave tips when they order food to go, i guess coz most of the work put into it was done by the cooks, not the waiter/waitress. or something like that.

You did your job, and you expect a tip for it. If you delivered it to me (either at my table, or at my home), I'd tip you, but since I had to come get it, you get NO tip.

Carryout is a FAR higher stress job than waiter IMO. You have so much more to deal with as well as more people who are in a bigger hurry and are always mad no matter what.

lol #90 you've clearly NEVER been a server. when i used to wait tables, you had to beg, bribe, or blow a manager to nail a takeout shift - they were SO much easier and more desirable than dealing with tables.

Ahh, I think I'll just stop with the comment reading here and giggle my dear. Everyone's idiotic comments and lack of experience can go sit in a locked freezer. (:

To #59: how about people who do earn more than the minimum but also work hard for it? I think its's BS that you just decide that richer-than-the-lower-waged people do not work for their money. To the OP: get a different job if this does not suit you? Like it has been said: tips are always in any case optional, and there is no way I would tip for a take-out.

when I worked as a server/bartender, we made $2.13/hour. we relied on our tips. those that have never worked in the industry should STFU. it's hard work. don't believe me, go get avjob in that field. I no longer work in that field but non-tippers and those that complain about tipping should just keep their asses at home.

snickers is right, in Zimbabwe, one US penny is $40,000 in their money. Too bad the dollar value sucks serious balls or you'd be ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-rich.

nice gut. put a shirt on, no one cares about your post pregnancy body.

#59 Opal thank you! Many don't understand. I bartend and deal w/ alot of togos. Anal people w/ their extra mayo on the side, no onions, cooked well done but not burnt BS! I make $4.22 an hr plus tips. Taxes are taken out so my paychecks are around $30 a wk. I realy on tips. I am not worried about educating people. Most of you are young and will probly need a jobs in the service industry to put your self though college. Then you'll truely understand

I agree, I mean if you're making an order that totalled well over $100 it's just courteous to leave a reasonable tip for their time and effort into putting it together as one of the users mentioned above UNLESS the service was lousy then I'll still leave a tip just not as generous as I initially planned. But I mean not leaving a tip at all at a restaurant is just pure asshattery IMO.

Just out of curiosity, you say you make $4.22 per hour plus tips - how much would you make in tips over an average week? You don't have to be totally specific, a ballpark idea would be more than fine. If you don't want to, obviously you don't have to, I'm just interested...

At least you got a tip. There are a lot of places where you don't get tips. Also at first I thought you were going to say that it ended you being a prank.

This is why I hate the fact that there are two Federal minimum wages. No, I have never been a server, and yes, I understand it is hard work, but, seriously, why should I have to pay you extra, on top of the money I just spent on my meal because you did your job-that you are paid to do? I should not have to feel obligated to leave you extra money because you were nice to me. It is your JOB to be nice and courteous and provide we with service. Likewise, if I feel that I have received inadequate service why should I still feel obligated to tip the waiter? If I were paying any other service person to do a job for me, and they did it poorly, I would refuse payment until it was done correctly and in a courteous manner. I work as a receptionist--do I get tips for politely welcoming students to the center, or helping them sign the waiting list, log into computers, pointing out the beverages on the back wall? No, of course I don't. If I didn't do all of this politely, I would probably get fired. Servers should just get paid minimum wage and not get tips or at least only get tips at the customers' discretion. Yes, I tip, but only because I feel obliged to and I know that makes up a large portion of their income. No, I don't tip well because I myself have very little money, which is why I don't eat out often.

If servers were paid an actual wage, the restaurant would be forced to raise its prices in order to make up the difference. So, either way, you'd still have to pay more, except in the hypothetical situation, you'd have little recourse if the service sucks.

I'd rather pay more for a meal than tip someone who put in a minimum effort. Tips are for exeptional service, not average service.

@89, thx for telling us ur cheap. if u dont believe servers should get tipped then just go eat at taco bell. and of course u shouldnt execpt to get any tip at all being a receptionist cuz all u do is sit ur ass all day doing simple mediocore tasks. as opposed to a server who basically does the complete opposite, standing on their feet during their entire shift and almost always moving about. so pls keep urself at home and eat ur microwavable pizza.

Yes, because not eating out often means I eat microwavable pizza and taco bell all of the time. I stated specifically that I don't go out to eat often because I don't have money, but, wait, I also said that I DO leave tips. No, they aren't always good, but I don't have much money. I don't expect tips at my job, and it isn't because I "sit on my ass" as you say. It is because it is my JOB to be polite and courteous to customers, just as it is the job of a waiter to be polite and courteous. Just because someone has to stand a lot or move around does not entitle them to a tip. People who work at grocery stores stand all day and move around a lot as well. They also have to lift heavy objects from time to time. Why is it, by your argument, that they don't get tips?

I personally work in takeaway and I think that people who dont tip are absolutely ridiculous to not tip. What they dont realize is that most takeaway get paid $3/hour or less. and unlike what everyone is saying, Most employers WILL NOT fill in the rest to make it minimum wage so to assume that is preposterous. Personally I have had several customers order and not tip consistently. What people need to remember is that WE DO PACKAGE YOUR FOOD and with that in mind, whether you get a glob of spit mixed into your honey mustard, or some dandruff parmesan cheese is at our disposal. you do not want to piss of the people handling your food. becuause Tipping is EXPECTED, because the GOVERNMENT taxes us on it reagardless on whether we recieve one at all. we are taxed on total sales! you dicks!

I know it doesn't work like this in Canada in most places but I thought most US restaurants(not takeout) add 15% gratuity tip that you're obliged to pay anyway? I personally don't agree with it just because you're paying the same tip rate whether the service was good or not. anyway to the OP, I forgot to add earlier, that really sucks :(

some places charge that for larger parties.
