If you cant tip on carry out or dining in DONT GO. Stay home! If you think resturant employees don't deserve a tip you are nuts. Hmm do they come in to your job and order you around and treat you like dirt? Funny thing is that if they do that to you, you still get paid.
**** you, you aren't entitled to a tip, I'll go and eat where ever the **** I want and whether or not I tip is MY decision, not yours. If your a shitty server or your a prick, expect a single penny waiting on the table for you, i'll leave you the penny just to piss you off, it's rather funny.
@everyone. If you're against tipping you're selfish and a cheapskate. That said. You shouldn't always feel obliged to tip people for doing their job. I tip when people are pleasant and helpful. And that's most of the time. If someone serving me food was cheeky or made me feel uncomfortable. I wouldn't bother. I'm in Scotland where everyone get's minimum wage at least
why are ppl saying servers make less then min wage?? you idiot's servers dont make less then min wage first of all thats y we have min wage cuz u cant make less then that!! second it illegal to pay someone less that y we have min wage duhhhhh!!!
First, if you're going to call someone an idiot, at least try to use some correct spelling or grammar. You don't need an apostrophe to make something plural (idiots, not idiot's). And many servers are paid less than minimum wage, since they legally have to report their tips, and so employers can count that, allowing some waitstaff members to be paid only a couple of dollars an hour. According to the law, if you don't make enough tips, then the employer is supposed to make up the difference in wage until you make at least minimum wage, but some people just kind of don't. Oh, and your first and second points were exactly the same thing, that minimum wage is the minimum. Thanks anyway.
I worked takeout at a restaurant while I was in college, and the takeout person actually does a LOT of work. They make sure everything looks nice in the box, they put together all the sauces, they add flatware and napkins, they make sure everything is correct, warm, and in the bag by the time you get there. Plus they took your order over the phone and ran back and forth to the kitchen trying to put it all together. Doing takeout was JUST as difficult as waiting tables. Takeout people are thankful for even a dollar or two. When it's a huge catering order (like it sounds like this was), it's just common courtesy to leave a few bucks. Takeout people get paid the same as servers, so it's less than minimum wage.
what alternate universe do you live in where takeout workers get paid the same as servers? i have never in my life heard of that. they make at least minimum wage if not more (i made $7.25/hr when I did takeout in like 2004) and a tip is certainly awesome but shouldn't be expected.
Here's a tip. For all of you cheap idiots who are against tipping. Don't eat out at the same restaurants often. You will have a very hard time getting half way descent service from anyone and rightly so. I also recommend the film Waiting. You would be surprised how accurate some of the film is.
For all the Morons waiting on CUSTOMERS in the US, make sure you get paid enough to earn a living. Don't expect the customer to pick up where your employer slacks off. If you depend on tips to make a living you'd better do one hell of a job, because people expect to pay for their meal, not for the work someone else does! I wpuldn't mind paying more for a meal if I go out, but if I tip I only do it for exceptional service, or extremely tasty food, not as a bonus for shitty wages.
Quit complaining OP. You knew that when you decided to become a sever in a restaurant that tips are not mandatory, but that it is up to the customer to CHOOSE whether or not to tip you. Just count the order as a loss and move on with your life.
oh and just a bit of trivia for you folks who dont believe in tipping...back in the day before manners fell to the wayside, tips were given before your order is taken, it was shortened from 'to insure proper service' to 'tips'. now it is customary to leave gratuity generally based on the service received. if you wanna stand around for an extra 10 minutes even though your takeout is done because you paid and didnt tip, be my guest. dont piss off the people who handle your food.

who the hell tips takeout? no one.
most people i know don't leave tips when they order food to go, i guess coz most of the work put into it was done by the cooks, not the waiter/waitress. or something like that.
