Also, to all those suggesting a right turn--OP didn't say they were in the right lane, so that may have been impossible.
True, but I pictured it as a two-lane road when I read the FML. It seems like if it hadn't been, those cars that were so antsy to go and were honking at the OP would have just gone around him and done that themselves.
I understand how you felt, but drivers will honk for any reason. You can't let it get to you.
Get out of the car and press the crosswalk button if there is one. That always changes the light, at least in my town. I agree with #28, they were probably just honking because you needed to scoot up a few feet for the sensor, or else they would have gone with you.
I was thinking the same thing. I've been stuck behind someone like that before. We missed a full light cycle for a left turn because (s)he was too far back and wouldn't move up when I honked. The car ran the red eventually. I stopped at the line and only waited 15 seconds to turn legally. If that's the case YDI.
That's happened to me too! It was so unfair because we've had to use that light all the time and it never took that long. So I figured it was broken. ): YOU DIDN'T DESERVE IT.
Everyone saying he shouldn't have gone, because "it's a red light" obviously hasn't been in this situation. I've never run a red light until I was driving to pick my friend up who works at the mall. The mall has it's own traffic light, due to the high traffic volume. I waited at that light for over ten minutes. What was I supposed to do? Sleep there? I ran the light, and I regret nothing.
Even if the light wasn't working, don't go unless other people are going with you. Or, since it sounds like you may have been on a one-lane road, call the non-emergency number for your police station and let them know what's going on. They'll probably send a community service officer or something out there to direct traffic. Also, the right-turn/u-turn/right-turn thing is a good idea. If the light was broken, I'm your city and/or county knows about it by now, so you can probably contest any ticket that they send you.
Take it to court. If the light was really broken, there will be others there in the same situation. If there are no others, well then you're ******.

You are dumb. You should have your license taken away. Its a red light you dont go on red.
YDI for giving in to peer pressure
