Today, I was heading out for my flight to Australia. I'd put a padlock on my luggage to keep my wallet and passport safe, only to realize way too late that I'd left the key at home. I couldn't get at my passport and ended up missing my flight and my whole vacation along with it. FML

Generally my passport and wallet stay on my person at all times when I'm traveling, so I don't understand why you would even put them in your luggage, let alone lock them in there. Especially since your passport is needed several times before you even board the plane and both items should at least be in your carry on luggage with you on the plane, not in your checked luggage. If they are in your carry on luggage, it's with you all the time, thus not needing a lock either. I could understand having a lock for the luggage during your vacation. It sucks you missed your vacation, but YDI.

Normally it's better safe than sorry, but you're too safe, and I'm sure very sorry!

My luggage has one of those TSA approved locks but I rarely lock it, because (a) no valuables, including ID, are normally carried in checked bags - which are the only kind you'd even need to think about locking, since your carry on stays with Yu at all times - and (b) if they can't open the lock for some reason, they will just break it or cut it off. There would have to have been some form of tool at the airport to open the bag. Even if it was damaged - you can buy luggage at many airports or they can plastic wrap yours. And it's the height of foolishness not to check and recheck that you have all necessary items, especially when you have so much at stake. I feel for you, but YDI at least a little bit for being so careless and unprepared.

I am pretty sure the airport would have had a set of bolt cutters

I thought padlocks had to be tsa approved anyway, meaning they have master keys to them. I would have tried to get them to open it for me.

well this vacation might be ruined but ydi for not watching how to open padlocks on YouTube. It takes less than a minute.

might be just me but I have a lot luggage locks that can be opened with other luggage lock keys, could have been a good idea to scope someone out who had the same brand of luggage locks! maybe their key would have fit yours!

You're an absolute idiot. YDI without a doubt.

If you ever forget the lock to something that has a zipper. If you take a pen and push on the zipper portion you can open your bag. The you just be to move the zipper around to reseal the bag

get a pen. push it into the zipper and open up the bag. get your wallet and passport out. then use the zip to zip it back up. That's how baggage handlers do it if they need to search your bags

I'm shocked that the TSA could not open it for you as they seem to be able to reach not any other bag that is locked. Probably should have asked as I guarantee they had keys to fit the lock or bolt cutters to open. Further more those documents should always be on you when travelling.
