Today, I was on a first date. When the bill came, he refused to pay for my $6 salad. I had to go ATM-hunting to pay for my $6 salad. FML

Why do you expect the guy to pay on the first date? You obviously had no intend of paying, so you left your money home in case he did not pay for you. But boohoo he didn't anyway. Also, you sound like a girl that only orders a salad and then eats half the food of other peoples plates.

I would never dream of going on a date and expecting my date to pay for me, unless they had expressly insisted that they do so; and even then I'd be uncomfortable with it. My main reason is simply overwhelming self-reliance, but do you honestly want to suggest that he can buy another date and your attention through flashing cash?

I am so TIRED of people saying "The guy should pay for the date." In my opinion, whoever does the asking out should pay for the date. That being said, OP, you are a moron. NEVER go on a date or out to eat without at least SOME cash!

Nah, should be 50/50 unless someone offers to pay for everything. If you accept someone elses invitation to go on a date you aren't doing them a favour, you have a vested interest in it as well, ergo you have the same motivation and should have the same consequences, the expense and general discomfort that embodies a first date, as them.
