"You deserved it for promoting a horrible addiction" - Woah there, what happened to the personal choice? This is like how gay-haters are scared that because their child might come in contact with a homosexual that they might somehow "catch it." You said yourself, it's a personal choice, children aren't that easily influenced and will make up their own mind either way. Even then, it's not the worst addiction out there and it's a damn sight better than most things teenagers do. Just because someone does something doesn't necessarily mean they "promote" it, either, that bugs me. Not everyone is a role model, so shouldn't be expected to behave as such.

While I don't promote smoking, I do promote personal choice AS LONG AS the person making the choice is fully informed.

Children aren't easily influenced? Are you kidding me? Granted, we don't know what level of school this is, so we don't know how old the kids are, but in general, most young children will mimic anything they see, especially if they see someone they know/respect, like a parent or older sibling, doing it. And everyone IS a role model, whether you know it or not - whatever you do, someone can see you and be influenced by you.

Most people I know who smoke are well aware of the health risks

most smokers know the risks of smoking. I can't think of a single person who hasn't been lectured on smoking

Bad metaphor: being gay doesn't harm one's health whearas smoking does. I would know; both my grandfathers (both sides) died of lung cancer from smoking.
