OP's mum defending the dog like that was probably why the dog got defensive over the spot in the first place. You need to be strict but fair with dogs. It's how they themselves organise their packs. You should have just stood up for yourself.

I don't understand why a lot (not all) of people who own little dog's treat them like little people and allow them to get away with such poor manners. It just creates disrespectful and aggressive dogs. I love my dog but, like people, dogs need rules and boundaries too.

My cat can be the same, except she simply jumps on top of my lap to claim her spot so I can't get off the couch. sorry your mom likes your dog more. FYL

Your mom should watch The Dog Whisperer... it might become more aggressive with time... and next time try to show it who's boss and throw it off the couch!
