Today, I was taking a walk when I noticed an elderly man on the ground, unmoving. Being a registered nurse, I tried to give him CPR. As my lips touched his, he hacked a loogie and spat it into the back of my throat. I swallowed. FML

Sounds fishy. Aren't you supposed to check if the guy is breathing and if his airway is clear beforehand? Seems like that would have alerted you that this guy is crazy prior to starting.

1. I would throw up on him because I would throw up almost instantly. No doubt he would be in firing line for being so close. 2. I would leave, gather myself for a minute or two then return. You being a nurse failed to follow the most important rule in healthcare . Protect yourself body substance isolation. Why do mouth to mouth without a barrier . Call 911 . And CPR beings with compressions now not breathing . You deserve it probably got something now

Agreed! Although if he wasn't breathing but had a pulse, breathing was the right thing to do. Last thing I heared was that breathing isn't even mandatory anymore, the amount of oxygen you "donate" is that limited that the victim is helped more with constant compressions. Should have checked for obstructions first anyway, if he went down due to an obstruction in his respiratory system, there would have been signs.

It wasn't mentioned but we don't know that they didn't check the vitals, sweep the airway and not try compressions first. You do realize how limited space is to submit a FML right?
