Today, I was told that my insurance will no longer cover my birth control as it's deemed "unnecessary" for a man, which, according to them, I've been since August. I'm definitely still a woman. FML

to 18- I'm the op... I didn't realize I hadn't been signed in when I posted. Basically, I have had the same.insurance for years and been using it for the same birth control for at least 5. I'm not sure what happened... Some clerical error I guess. I had it figured out but it was definitely weird.

It's those ******* jeans! Jeans always make you look like you have a boner. Even if you're female.

Well that's ******* dumb of your insurance.

My husbands name is spelled Karol... He's six four and very built. When anyone calls his name he says " do I LOOK like a ******* KAROL to you? " as on a woman cause they always look surprised when he walks up. He has since legally changed it to Karl.

No reason to get pissed off at innocent people. Of course they're going to think they're dealing with a woman since Karol is a woman's name! This is what dim-witted parents desperate for a unique name end up with...

# 61 Or parents with Easter European (Polish/Slovak) roots where Karol simply means Karl/Charles? As in Karol Wojtyła, also know as Pope John Paul II? But yes, indeed in an English speaking environment everybody who just read the name on a coffee mug would assume they are dealing with a woman and there shouldn't be a reason to get all passive-agressive about that.

I don't know what country is 58 from, but in Poland 'Karol' is a male name and 'Karolina' is a female version of it. These days it's quite common to have some name related problems, since so many people are travelling and living in different countries - mine gets always mispronounced, and, what is more, it is pronounced as a word that actually has a meaning in my language, sounds amusing at times. Not that I blame anyone for that, it's just how the people in UK read certain clusters of vowels, it's natural. Just saying.

The name Andrea is like that too! In German, it's a woman's name, but in Italy and some Eastern European countries, so I'm told, it's a man's name.

I wonder how that happened. Maybe someone pulled a prank on you ?

Sounds like the operation was a succses. though the memory loss might be an issue.

Sir, I think you should just go back to English class, and get an A.. Until then, avoid all computers with keyboards.

Forgive me if this is a really stupid question but why would insurance cover birth control? Isn't it your own stuff to deal with, like 'if you don't want babies don't have sex' or something...?

Health insurance sometimes covers the cost of birth control. It depends on the company and plan. Mine is supposed to and has been up until this. Some people's won't except for medical conditions, like endometriosis.

pheebs314 17

Not all of the cost... Just part of it. As do most of my friends' health insurance policies. Sorry for the 2 parter, I just realized I should add this in.

Mine does. It's in their best interest anyway. Birth control is cheaper than prenatal visits, and all the medical problems children have. It's also really ridiculous to expect people to not have sex.

Who said birth control pills sole purpose was to prevent pregnancy? A good portion of women on birth control pills use them as hormonal therapy.

67-- yeah, if your insurance provider is the Roman Catholic Church.

Same way that its your own job to keep yourself healthy, so insurance shouldn't cover anything but freak accidents. Unless you work in a career that has a lot of potential risks, like being a doctor, police officer, or firefighter. Why should they get covered for their medical bills or any benefits? they chose to become one of those rather than an office clerk or something. "If you don't want to get sick, don't ever eat junk food or food you haven't prepared yourself, don't put yourself in situations where you might have to be around people who are sick, or where you might accidentally fall or get hurt".

67, most insurance companies do cover birth control because it is cheaper than providing abortions or prenatal care. Mine does. In the U.S., soon everybody who isn't employed by religious employers will have it completely covered and without a copay. See, my birth control is generic which means it costs me $10 a month with insurance or $70 without it. I can always find an extra $10 for the birth control, but $70 is harder so perhaps I wouldn't get it one month and roll the dice on pregnancy. If I did, they'd have to cover any prenatal care I get (they wouldn't cover an abortion as I have federal insurance through Mom's work) and that costs them a small fortune and me a pretty penny as well. it is cheaper for them to pay the $60 a month (probably less as they work out deals) than it is to pay for all my doctors visits, any pregnancy medications, and the delivery itself. Heaven help us if I needed a C section.

Hey, dumbass, I take birth control pills for endometriosis. Read a book.

pheebs314 17

so do both of my sisters :D the doctor was actually surprised I don't have it because every other woman I'm related to does. I'm just lucky... or maybe its because I'm a man...

you're right, this is a stupid question. get off the internet and go read a book or 2. or 100.

My insurance covers the total cost of my birth control. Birth control isn't just to not get pregnant. In my case my periods get so bad that the pain causes me to throw up everything I try to eat or drink and they last up to ten days. Birth control lessens the pain and shortens the period itself.

To the people who don't understand how this happened, a couple of my friends have had an issue at our university where the system changed their genders. No idea how the hell that shit happened, and the clueless people who work in the IT department had no idea how to fix it for the longest time. Still don't know how the change occurred in the first place.

Not a very good explanation for 'those who don't understand', since you don't know what happened either...

OP, send a pic of your ****** to prove you're still a woman. That might work :)

You should be paying for that yourself.

have you considered making a bleach smoothie? you should

Marrach 7

What the hell does bleach have to do for this FML?

Well 98, they mean that 86 should drop dead. Even I knew that and I'm oblivious to subtle things like that!

Gotta love the American health care system, insurance companies trying to avoid paying out at every possible turn.. And apparently they create their own reasons as to why they can't now lol xD
