Today, I was turned down from my dream job at a graphic design firm. Before the interview, concerned about my hobo style would not impress the company, I shaved, cut my long hair, and even bought a suit. They said I wasn't "free-spirited and creative enough." FML

You should never change your style for someone else.

I have my doubts that dressing properly for an interview is what lost you the job. Could it be your portfolio?

you should always ask what the dress code is especcally for a design job where it could be either way.

This is why I could never be an artist, even though that was my original dream since I was in middle school (become a film director). Artists tend to be self centered, vain, and shallow. "Wow, great resume, good education, nice work ethic and great portfolio...but ...wait! You don't look artsy! Sorry, we don't hire your kind." **** them, go work for a REAL graphic design company, one that relies on someone's accomplishments and successes rather than their "look". The only jobs that should hire people based off how much their style conforms to their organizations "image" are retail shops like Abercrombie and American Eagle.

I'm a graphic designer. I think the suit was too much as well but I STRONGLY DOUBT that's the reason why they turned you down. They said they thought you WEREN'T those things, not that you didn't LOOK them. If you were too dressed up for the interview but your work was great, you'd have been likely to be hired. They probably didn't like your work or your attitude.

You'll get another job. It's your portfolio that counts, not your affect.

that's not true, companies do respect professionalism. And free spirit and creativity doesn't have to come from the outward appearance. Maybe your interviewer didn't think your profile exhibited what they were looking for. There are plenty of reasons, so don't blame it on your friends for doing you a favor. If you went in looking like a hobo they may not even have spoken to you and just called for security.
