If you actually read this - I'm going to tell you how I got my job in a similar situation (I work in advertising). I went back to the guy and said, "Tell you what - I'll give you 2 weeks for absolutely free, no strings attached. If you don't like what I do, we'll part ways. But in 2 weeks you'll need to make a hiring decision." I've been working for the guy I said that to for nearly 20 years. And he paid me for the 2 weeks as well.
For one, hobos and hippies fail. For two, don't make excuses - you just fail. Not only did you miss out on your dream job but you also no longer look like a hobo - which is double burn on you because you want to look that way. .. Or is that triple burn..
Whatever, the company sounds like it's staffed by neo-hippie douchebags. Screw them.
You can't tell how creative someone is just by the way they dress or how they look. If they based how free-spirited or creative you were on that, then they're obviously not very good artists.
he could've been refering to your graphics portfolio, sorry to hear turned down though
YDI for trying to be like Clay Aiken.

YDI for changing your style and making it look like you have no creativity or inspiration

You should never change your style for someone else.
