you have to pull the chair from the back, i.e. the big wheels should be in front, if it's an obstacle/heavy slope. I couldn't push somebody in a wheelchair over a very small door sill, until he told me to do as above.

Major karma points to you, OP. Helping with a wheelchair is really tough if you don't know the tricks. Take the girl for coffee when you see her next (at an accessible place, if possible).

I hear universities have gyms now!
