Today, I went into labor. I called my mother to ask her to drive me to the hospital. She wanted me to wait for her to take a nap first. FML

OP here, to answer some questions, the father and I are married, he was just working at the time and my mom is closer to me than my SO's work so we had already planned for her to take me if this were to happen since he works long shifts. She was definitely serious about taking a nap but thank god she didn't cuz I was in full blown labor and had a few complications. Long story short, in the end my daughter had to have her stomach pumped as soon as I delivered and she wasn't breathing due to her swallowing and choking on my amniotic fluid and her meconium. She was fine after all that happened other than a fever of 104.5. So if my mom had taken a nap I'm not sure what would have happened.

I accidentally clicked "That could've happened to me" I don't think it could've though, considering I'm a man.

Well, you wouldn't want her to be cranky.

Sounds like my mom, even when I needed to go to the emergency room she was too tired and my husband was at work..she made me wait until he got off. I hope someone was able to help you and get you there safely or that she was just joking. Congratulations on the baby, hope the labor wasn't too bad!! :)

You're not alone op, I went into labour in the middle of the night and my husband couldn't drive, so my mum offered to take me. It took her nearly an hour to get to my house and she lives literally a kilometre away

sounds like something my mom would say haha sorry you had to deal with that OP

I remember when I hit my hand with an axe while camping. We drove me to the hospital, but stopped by a hotel first so my mother could take a shower. Luckily I had some paper towels and it only took 17 stitches So, while I know nothing about how intense labor is, I understand the self-absorbed parent

Even if the father was in the picture. Labor usually doesn't progress in a matter of minutes. Most women labor anywhere from 10-24+ hrs so her MIL taking a nap isn't unrealistic. I feel like I need more background. Were you having severe contractions or were they more of the cramping kind. Were you even dilated when you did get to the hospital? Personally this is and isn't an FML. Cuz my MIL woulda probably been like you'll be fine I'm busy go for a walk. When the contractions are 10 mins apart then you can go to the hospital. Otherwise they'll just turn you away anyway.

My shortest labor was 2 hours and 21minutes exactly and I have never labored more than 9 hours. So your 10-24 is not correct for everyone. Really if someone rings you to say get me to the hospital I'm in labor its best to do what they say, maternal instinct is powerful and reassurance from medical staff can help calm the mother and progress labor.

Not every hospital turns you away if they're not 10min apart. Alot of hospitals if not most will take a mother in labor no matter how far apart they are, sometimes they're Braxton hicks contractions and they'll send you home but they'll always admit you just to make sure and get an epidural going when time is needed, they'll make you comfortable and monitor you, some people's water breaks way before your contractions are that close and you can have the baby right then. It's safer for mama and baby to go earlier because you never know what could happen.

All four of my pregnancies were 5 hours or less from beginning to end, my second had the cord wrapped around her head and neck so I had to get an emergency C-section as soon as they saw, so it's a good thing I didn't wait until my contractions were very close together, my last was born within an hour and a half from beginning to end.

In her defense labor could take several hours. Mine took 9

Sometimes they can take a long time like yours or longer, my friend was in labor 36hrs. But some women get lucky and I've known one who was in labor for 40min. It's always safer to be at the hospital earlier just in case. But I guess it comes down to personal preference and every woman knowing her body and what she needs :)

I'm sorry OP that you had to worry about your child like that,

Like going into labour isn't stressful enough. Happy to hear your baby is ok, though. Congratulations.

Similar thing happened with my mom. She went into labor late at night and my dad said wait till the morning but she wanted to go and the doctor said it was good she did or I probably wouldn't have made it. Glad it all turned out ok!

Good thing you got to the hospital in time! My son also swallowed meconium because he had a bowel movement in utero. I would have never known if I didn't start having contractions. They were coming 2-3 minutes apart right away and when we got to the hospital, they said they were going to monitor me for a half an hour since I wasn't dilated at all and they might have been warm up contracrions. About 20 minutes in, my sons heart rate dropped drastically and they ended up doing and emergency c-section. He is now a happy healthy almost 1 year old! Congratulations OP!

glad to hear the news! and congratulations on your baby!
