Today, I went to the beach with my friends to show off my engagement ring. I fell asleep in the sun and woke up extremely sunburnt to a text from my boyfriend confessing that he's been cheating on me. I gave him the ring back. Now I have its tan line on my finger. FML

Fyl. You did the right thing giving the ring back and leaving him and all, sorry about the sunburn... and the horrible memory the tan line will bring.

the most stupid thing I've heard in a very long time, well done.

You were probably born by an "oops mom" weren't you?

he probably cheated on you cuz you have a horrible tan

OP shoulda sold the ring and treated herself to a spa day. he cheated on her anyway and he gave her the ring so it was hers.

id love to agree, but with the number of bitches who keep the ring even if theyre the one who did the wrong thing...well...i have my reservations agreeing with you. ah the majority ruining it for the few.

An Engagement ring is a legal promise of marriage. If the promise is not kept by either party, for any reason. The ring must be returned to the other person.

no. you don't sign any contract so no legal value, it's just symbolic.

actually... no. there is no law on the books saying if you get engaged you have to get married. there is also no law requiring the return of the ring should things not work out. there are many crazy laws for things like making crossing the road with a duck on your head illegal, but returning rings ain't one of them

Actually, no it is considered legal property of the person that paid for it. It is considered a gift for marriage. If the marriage is cancelled, the ring legally goes back to whoever paid for it. There have been many court cases where the ring has been given back/same amount of money value because the girl refused to return it/sold it. It's sad, especially when the guy ***** up- but if taken to court, it's a really easy case to decide on.

Engagement ring laws vary by state, y'all.

Who would wear something like that at the beach, anyway? For future reference, OP (and others), sand can get between the prongs and stone, either loosening or dislodging it.

What a douchebag!!! Shoulda kept the ring though...
