the chair broke because of the reaction to the normal force. not "gravity". and i'd be ashamed of having this kind of "math" teacher. go learn something for real.
#69, gravity creates a pulling force downward, and the atoms in the desk have to push up to keep him/her from falling through (this is the normal force) so usually gravity is equal but opposite the normal force in cases like this. however, since force of gravity is proportional to the mass of the object (the OP) and this mass is particularly large, the atoms experienced an epic fail.
re: physics lessons "f=ma, blah blah blah, she must be heavy..." In my opinion, old desk. You do know that people that are in shape can weigh more then the 'recommended mass' of people at certain ages. I definitely am. I'm a hardcore athlete, but I weigh 200lbs and i'm 5'10". I don't LOOK 200lbs. But muscles weigh more then fat^_-. When people hear that I weigh 200lbs they go into shock "omg...no, you barely look 170lbs"
It's just a theory.
If they were fat enough to break a desk the teacher wouldn't have chosen them. It had to be a faulty desk. Also, I agree. **** gravity. I wanna fly. D:

Hey, I've seen some lard-arsed kids sitting on desks and they've been fine. It was probably an old desk. Or, if you ARE morbidly obese, sitting at your computer complaining about it won't help.
gravity is freakin' physics, not math! what the hell is that teacher doin? lol if "gravity" pulled you down so hard the desk broke, let's hope you didnt go all the way to the centre of the earth :D
