Today, it's my first Halloween in America since moving from Russia. While handing candy to children, my roommate told me to compliment a little girl by saying "You have a face only a parent could love". I found out it isn't a compliment when I was punched by her Dad. FML

Sayings like that translate oddly into different languages, especially because they don't always have one similar to it. OP might've thought it was a normal thing to say here.

The dad is an Ass! You should charge him! I'm pretty sure you must have said this comment with a strong accent. He should have realized you were not from here. Especially after you gave the candy. What jerk pops a guy after candy was handed to his kid dressed up in an costume! That guy needs anger management classes! Your friend didn't expect you to be punched!

your english seems good enough that you should have been able to tell it was clearly an insult. even translating word for word to russian yields an obvious insult.
