Today, MS Word kept crashing with a memory error, so I called tech support. Instead of actually fixing the problem, their tech wasted over an hour of my time defragmenting the hard drive, disabling the anti-virus, and downloading new video card drivers from some shady site, before giving up. FML

Probably wasn't tech support for the actual company, just people "authorized to do it" I had the same issue. Their stupid.

Go out to that interweb thingy, download the DBAN ISO, burn it to disk, leave it in the drive, reboot, and follow the prompts. Problem solved!!

I'm completely helpless with anything technological, but while the IT guy is doing this, does OP need to assist? If not, it doesn't sound horrible--time to sit around, get paid, and make a FML post. If so, it's frustrating, but that's probably the end of it.
