Cats don't listen to anyone, not even their master, when they're in a feeding frenzy. I had a cat once, and I actually had to pry a bird out of its claws. It didn't survive though.
And you couldn't just scare your cat into dropping it/not attacking it? I only have to say my cats name with a stern voice and he would probably drop it. And else I would lift him to make him drop it
The cat was smarter then you so you couln't get it back anymore? When I hear a birdie in trouble I'm usually capable of releasing it from our cats...
