LyraAlluse tells us more.
He got stuck in one of those oddly shaped bathroom trashcans. And it was his tail end that got stuck, so he was sticking out of the trashcan like a jack-in-the-box. Because the can was oddly shaped it was hard to figure out how to get the cat free and make it as humane as possible. Also, the cat kept trying to roll around in the trash can because he thought it would help. My cat isn't the brightest crayon in the package but he is pretty funny.

I envisioned the cat looking like grumpy cat, and being too stubborn to get out of the trash can.
Sounds like animal abuse to let your cat get that big. Put him on a diet.
Cats often get fat because of a hormonal imbalance after spaying or neutering. It happens. Also we don't know how narrow the trashcan is. Maybe OP was irresponsible, but I think "abuse" is too strong a word.
The cat isn't fat. He is a healthy size. It is just that that garbage can was too small.
Doesn't sound like this is the case for OP's cat, but if there's any Maine Coon in the furball's family, he or she is going to be a big kitty regardless. Doesn't mean they're unhealthy, though.
I adopted one of my cats from the pound and picked him out because he was a loud, fat snugglebug. No amount of strict dieting and attempts to make him exercise have had any effect in almost 8 years. Some cats are just fat.
I have a Maine coon. Hes a big cat but hes not fat. 21 lbs, :).
So big not fat? :) That's nice to hear Hope he learned and don't do it again :P
How cute! :)
oh my lord. you should probably put him on a diet. and a kitty treadmill. something, anything.
If he wants to go outside, why not teach him to walk on a leash?
My cat does have a leash and I take him on walks regularly. I always get the weirdest looks from the neighbors.
Lucky he got out before the "garbage" truck
Sooo cuteee!!! Pics pls!!
Start slowly dieting him (to fast and they can become sick). But seriously, start dieting him now or get expensive veterinarian bills later when he has diabetes or other obesity-related sicknesses.
How is this an FML?

... The only thing that surprised me about this is that it took that long to get him out. How did that happen? If he was only halfway in, I'd think you could just grab him and lift him out. Or gently tip over the can and dump him out.
