He got stuck in one of those oddly shaped bathroom trashcans. And it was his tail end that got stuck, so he was sticking out of the trashcan like a jack-in-the-box. Because the can was oddly shaped it was hard to figure out how to get the cat free and make it as humane as possible. Also, the cat kept trying to roll around in the trash can because he thought it would help. My cat isn't the brightest crayon in the package but he is pretty funny.

Maybe he's trying to get outside so he can get some exercise & fresh air..
I don't see how since a cat can get his entire body through any joke he can put his head through. That's why you see cats 'testing' places by lacing their heads close to, in and out of spaces...
They don't use their heads, but their whiskers.
Can't you carry the cat outside for a bit or maybe be a bit cruel and get a collar you can use with a leesh

I will clarify by saying that my cat was too fat for the garbage can he tried to squish himself into, which was one of those small, oddly shaped bathroom trashcans. Which really serve no purpose when you think about it, they never actually hold trash. But apparently they are effective cat traps. Anyways, my cat is a healthy weight it is just that the garbage can was too small and that is why he was too fat for it.
"Effective cat traps"...OP, I love you and your kitty in spite of having never met either of you! Thank you for making me laugh this morning...sounds like something my fuzzy little dumbass would try to do, even if, at 7 pounds, he would have a hard time succeeding at getting stuck.
Hate stupid people that find animal abuse everywhere. Keep having fun watching your kitty and keep spoiling him (within reasonable limits).

... The only thing that surprised me about this is that it took that long to get him out. How did that happen? If he was only halfway in, I'd think you could just grab him and lift him out. Or gently tip over the can and dump him out.
