Maybe because he cared for you and your family? Having just gone through a break up that left me emotionally shattered I understand where he's coming from. He should be saying "FML", not you.

If he wasn't close with your parents, that's messed up. But to be fair, I have talked to my ex's parents immediately after the break up and thanked them for having me around and being like second parents to me.
