Today, my family and I were on a road trip. Everything was fine until we discovered that my dad, the driver, was not only fast asleep, he was also snoring. We were in the middle of the highway. FML

I don't believe this at all.

I hope you were stopping to take breaks, if you were and he still fell asleep perhaps someone else should drive, he should sleep for a day or he might have a medical condition. My dad has fallen asleep at the wheel a few times, luckily with someone in the car with him to wake him up. He always drives with cruise control on and has an automatic, so he doesn't have to do anything but steer. I've felt tired and have had to manage it by playing loud upbeat music in the car, doesn't make other people too happy but there's no crashes or sleeping!

My friend who didn't trust anyone with his car because he got it brand new (factory order), was more than happy to drive us on a day trip. However, as we made our way back at 5PM after a day of driving and about a hundred kilometres left, he started yawning and leaning further back in his seat and constantly widening his eyes to shake off sleepiness. Everyone else had fallen asleep except me, so I took it upon myself to just keep talking and talking until we got home. It kept him awake but I don't think I have talked so much in my life since then.

Omg! I hope no accident(s) happened! Make sure that next time the driver has rested enough, switch driving every now and then & make stops on the way there. Being tired whilst driving is very dangerous and not to be taken lightly!

The only thing I can think of is OP's dad has narcolepsy maybe? This definitely needs a follow up.

If he had not been awake unusually long period of time then he probably is suffering from sleep apnea. Is he overweight, snoring at nights and/or has short periods of not breathing during sleep? If yes, he should see the doctor asap and not drive a car until he gets a diagnose and treatment. Otherwise it can happen again with different results.
