Today, my friend and I were in her mom's car talking about which job was harder: actor or artist. I said, "Art is easy. You just scribble on a piece of paper and call it abstract art." Her mom squinted at me in the rear-view mirror and my friend stopped talking. Then she said, "My mom is an artist." FML

well youre an idiot because art is much more complicated ... ... I can't draw for my life nor can I pass it off like I can ... meanwhile people will see a movie with jessica Simpson and call that "acting" ... it ain't hard

...honestly? Comparing actors and artists is like comparing apples and pears. Done well, each require talent and effort.

um no art is definitely not easy!!! i'm an artist myself, and trust me, its takes more effort than you think. why don't you try to draw a person realistically, with every minor detail. I can assure you a stick figure or 5-year old childish scribble will not be hung in an art museum. Like Picasso, his art may have been abstract but I'm well aware he spent many hours on his paintings. It is disrespectful to not appreciate such great works of art, which are the clothes on your body, designs in your room, and pictures on your wall.

FYL. How were you supposed to know her mother was a failure and couldn't get a real job?

Picasso proved many times, before his more famous works, that he was capable of drawing fantastic realism as well. (Just look at "The First Communion.") No talented artist is good only at their specific way of art (such as painting surrealism and cubism), he/she is has always mastered the basics, and realism, as well. Otherwise their art just isn't that good, honestly. Also, Picasso's paintings are far from scribbles. You're right to say he spent a lot of time on them. Art is a person's perception of what he/she sees, and/or a way to express something. It's not done in a hurry. I don't really know what OP thought art actually was. Anyway, of course you could scribble anything on a piece of paper and call it art. The question isn't if it's art or not – the question is if it's good art. I'm pretty sure a scribble from any idiot, who knows nothing about art or art techniques, would not be very good. There are loads of established artists who are bad at what they do as well, actually. But I suppose, to somebody who really doesn't understand art, everything is equal to a scribble. OP clearly didn't have sense enough to think of any of this. I actually believe OP didn't think at all. But that's all right. As an art student, I would have laughed if somebody said that to me. And my parents would as well. They are both artists. As for the actor/artist argument: they are both different forms of art. As I mentioned, I go to art school. I draw, I paint, I sculpture. But I've also had theatre, music and dance classes as well, as a part of the art course, in order to open our minds to new ways of thinking. But they are very different still, and it's impossible to compare them. (And I'm not even going to say anything about the whole "real job" thing... jeez...) "I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them." – Pablo Picasso

That was really rude and unecessary. Being an artist IS a real job. Asshole.

You're an idiot. Plain and simple. Being an artist isn't the way you refer to that profession. It's like just calling someone an engineer. Ok so they're an engineer, but what do they do? There are so many different types of engineers. Same thing with art. There are so many different kinds of artists. It's not just painters on the street you know. Graphic designers, architects, photographers, creative directors, advertisement! Those are all artist professions. Please learn something about what you're talking about before you make yourself look like an asshole. (Well put #140)

I don't know if I agree with you about the realistic art vs. abstract art. (I'm more into realistic stuff but truly inspired abstract art amazes me sometimes.) Imma add you on DA tho! Yeaahhh DeviantArt! www.this-quiet-storm.deviantart.com Scribbles my ass! And to the op: Y TOTALLY D I for being an incompetent d-bag. Don't simplify a field and craft you know absolutely nothing about. Guess what idiot? Applied arts account for EVERYTHING around you. Someone had to design all of it. Your furniture, your house, your gadgets, the ads you see, the television shows you watch and pretty much everything around you. Designer... they design... it's art. Being an "artist" entails an extremely broad spectrum of professions. It's not all starving painters on the street. (Which is actually an EXTREMELY difficult profession and comes with absolutely no guarantee's of security; you have to be very confident to venture into painting for your livelihood.) So stfu and try it yourself for a while, then you'll see just how easy it is.

Yeah man... and they're BOTH art forms anyway... They both take a lot of skill and practice.

your friend is an asshole for not warning you that their mom is an artist.

excuse me, my life is art, it is what i am majoring in school- and it is in no way 'easy' if you have ever even seen modern art, yeah it my look like a 'scribble' but what you see behind that is often a moving complex piece that only at first glance looks like a scribble. if you knew anything you would know that acting and traditional art, are both actually art forms that people spend years and years practicing and honing the skills that make what you see as just a scribble something that is moving makes you feel different emotions, and stands the test of time. granted, some art does suck, but you know what? so do the majority of the actors presently in hollywood.

Acting is easy too... What's acting? You show up, say some lines, and then go home. Drake and Josh, anyone?! :D

I agree with OP's description about art haha Though, if you think about it, actors are also artist. That's why at least most somewhat accomplished actors are given honourary degrees from either a college they went to or some random college which makes them a DFA, Doctor of Fine Arts

But, if all people see when they look at it is a scribble, what's the point of all the stuff supposedly behind it? Isn't that a bit of a waste?
