Today, my friend and I were in her mom's car talking about which job was harder: actor or artist. I said, "Art is easy. You just scribble on a piece of paper and call it abstract art." Her mom squinted at me in the rear-view mirror and my friend stopped talking. Then she said, "My mom is an artist." FML

well youre an idiot because art is much more complicated ... ... I can't draw for my life nor can I pass it off like I can ... meanwhile people will see a movie with jessica Simpson and call that "acting" ... it ain't hard

...honestly? Comparing actors and artists is like comparing apples and pears. Done well, each require talent and effort.

I'm an actress, but I'd say art is way more difficult. YDI.

to the op: go to http://goshnessmaggy.deviantart.com/ and tell me if those are just scribbles. being an artist takes alot of talent. even abstract art (which i'm not a fan of myself) the scribble art only gets into museums either because they're well thought out or they're rich and know people, alot of abstract is incredibly hard to do. but ofcourse realistic art (what i do) is the hardest because people expect you to make it look like the original subject (plus this was a good opportunity to advertise my art so thanks) xD but yeah understand that your statement is an insult to artists because we work hard for our talent

They deserve it. Ask a question like that and get an answer you don't like? Your fault.

She's right. I went to some art museum and among the pieces there were 2 florescent light tubes parallel to each other and they called it art. This was right next to a piece going for $74,000 which was a canvas with 3 red, yellow, and blue horizontal stripes. God being an abstract artist must be easy..

If it were put up for sale, doesn't necessarily mean it was sold.

just because you're not good at art or you can't see abstract art, doesn't mean its worthless. if you think being an abstract art is easy, why don't you do it?

obviously you dont know shit about art...YDI for being dumb!

The whole thing about Modern art is the thought and process behind the work. I'm not one for the aesthetics of Modern art but I do appreciate the creativity behind it. Art is Art. If someone see's something and decides to call it art, then go them it's all a really personal thing. Also each piece of art should be judged individually. I'm an artist but I'm not a pompous ass as one of the posters said. Also a "real job"... acting and art are both real jobs. I will be graduating with a degree in Graphic Design. It's a real job, you know logos and websites don't make themselves. Acting is an art! Surprise! Also performance art... They are equally as hard in different areas.

::takes a bite out of a bagel, places it next to a cup of coffee:: ....I call it..."Morning Nosh". I'll start the bidding at five thousand dollars.

(Please excuse my terrible grammar here as it's near 3 AM.) I think I saw a few posts here and there which talked about "Art being anything that's beautiful." But what is it exactly we call "beauty"? Shiny eyes, sparkles, and the boring crap that goes up in living room walls? All that stuff is at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to art. If anything, art is supposed to challenge conventional ideas of beauty by bringing to light new ways of seeing things. Also, so many people in this thread fail to realize that the most difficult part of drawing/painting is in the conceptual stage--not the step which requires putting pen to paper. I personally think acting, painting, drawing, writing what have you, is all on par in terms of difficulty when it comes to that planning stage. (An artist comes up with an idea, tries several ways to express that idea, comes up with several compositions before finally executing. After an actor is given a role, he contemplates the different ways he can play the same character, researches for accuracy and as an aid to "getting in character" before finally executing. Same thing, when it comes down to it.)

Also, remember there's different sectors of drawing/painting related art as well. The majority of those who call themselves artists today are more specifically commercial artists, a.k.a. graphic designers, web designers, car designers, tatoo artists etc. etc. While the two often cross over, there is a subtle difference between those who make a living through commercial art and those who focus more on contemporary art (the stuff that gets put up in galleries).

I'm actually looking forward to being an artist in the future and until then, I'm working very hard for it. I'm offended by this and I believe you should get your facts straight... And yes, it probably would have been a good thing to know that your friend's mother is an artist.
