Today, my husband and I were diagnosed with herpes. We've been together for five years and were both virgins before. Even the doctor couldn't give any other explanation. FML

ummm #200 and #276 you are both DUMB AS SHIT. type 1 doesn't MAGICALLY turn into type 2 depending on what body part it's on. if you have a cold sore, and you blow a dude, he doesn't now have genital herpes. he has a cold sore on his dick. Totally different situation. TAKE A SEX ED CLASS.

Wrong, I'm an MD and yes, they are different strains, however, the sacral ganglia can become infected with HSV-1, just as the trigeminal ganglia (in the face) can be infected with HSV-2. The other way around is MUCH more common, but it does happen (especially if you combine open cold sore with oral sex). Sorry to burst your bubble.

take a bio class you idiot.....the virus that causes cold sores gives you genital herpes if you have oral sex during the infectious breakout.....it is not cold sores on your dick as you so eloquently put it its genital herpes

oral with cold sores and then sex after will definitely cause it too. there was an article in cosmo a few years ago and it seared into my brain because my boyfriend constantly gets cold sores.

I agree. There is the possibility that someone lied or cheated. But it has also been proven that you can get herpes from non sexual activities, such as using a public toilet. Or, one of them may have spread it through oral sex if they were not aware that their cold sores are actually a form of herpes and can be spread that way too. Keep your head up. At least you are married and don't have to worry about spreading it to others. Sorry for your luck.

I'm an MD, and yes, you can can Herpes from cold sores. Cold sores come from HSV-1 most commonly, and genital herpes comes from HSV-2 most commonly. However, they are similar enough viruses that they HSV-2 can infect the oral cavity, and HSV-1 the sacral ganglia in the genitals. Unfortunately, it is more likely that someone cheated, so I would ask to have the HSV typed.

What makes you think it's more likely someone cheated? Granted, if neither had any kind of symptoms for the last 5 years then yes it's unlikely that the virus was dormant for 5 years and it's more likely that one of them cheated in the interim, but we don't know this - it's poss one of them might suffer from cold sores and haven't made the connection? Maybe the doctor (GP?) isn't aware that both strains may be responsible?
