Today, my mother told my little sister and me that she has breast cancer to make us feel sorry so that we would clean our rooms. She is perfectly fine. My little sister still thinks that "mommy is going to die". FML

Today, my mother called me and told me that she went to the hospital. This wasn't a surprise 'cos she normally goes to the hospital for the smallest things. I was a smartass and asked, "What now? You finally have lung cancer from all those cigarettes?" Apparently, she does. FML

Today, my friend (she's 14) said she had lung cancer. This made me and my other friend very worried for her, but now we know she was faking it since when she was "at the hospital" she was at a friend's house, and her mom came to the school to confirm she was faking the whole thing. FML

Today, I found out that the giant tumour on my leg isn’t cancerous or dangerous. My mom cried, and I was super relieved. Later on, I heard her on the phone in tears because now she won’t be able to get a free vacation or home renovations from the Make A Wish foundation. FML

Today, I told my mother I was doing fine with my classes when I actually wasn't because her mother is dying, and I didn't want her to have more things to stress about. She found out and she's very hurt. I feel awful about it and I know lying wasn't the right thing to do, but in the moment I didn't want to cause her any more pain. FML

Causing children that kind of psychological pain just to get them to clean their rooms is, well, child abuse, in my opinion. And yes, I do realise that's a very serious thing to say, but if a kid is going through the agony of thinking her mommy is dying, and the mother deliberately put the idea there just to get her way, then yeah - that is serious. And to the people saying that OP and the sister should've cleaned their rooms without their mother having to resort to that kind of measures: Children don't always do exactly what their parents tell them, that's not news. And if their mother has an extra hard time getting them to do reasonable things like cleaning their rooms, then maybe she should do a careful evaluation of her own parenting style. Just saying.
