Today, my mother won't let me intern at a prestigious college, working with graduate students and professors, and being paid, because she doesn't want to drive me. FML

Great opportunity to get your license perhaps?

Is there no other way to get there? Perhaps a bus, or bike, if not too far? There has to be a way no?

Tell her to kick rocks and do it anyway

Why is everyone coming down on the OP so hard? For one, public transportation in California sucks, and it's hard to accept an internship knowing that you may be hours late from no fault of your own. Internships are not going to pay enough to cover a cab or an uber for every single shift unless this is the most amazing internship ever. Also, why is it such a huge problem to think a mother would help her child prepare for their future? Aren't parents supposed to help you succeed, not forbid you from doing things to help yourself? She should be proud of her kid for being offered the internship and actively trying to better themselves. Sure, she could say no and might have good reason to. But all the comments that are outraged at the very thought of "selfishly" thinking your mother might support you seem harsh.

the commute might be a long one. the times may conflict with the mother's own work schedule. I mean to call the mother selfish is to infer that she does nothing but sit on her bum all day at home. I'm sure that she has obligations

@128 She didn't say the mother was selfish, she just said the mother should be willing to help. Whether that's driving her there or helping to pay for public transportation until Op starts getting paid, she should be willing to help her daughter succeed in life.

Like everyone's already said, you need to take up some other means of transportation. Don't let go of such a great opportunity.

no offence, but its totally reasonable for her to not want to drive you, especially if you are old enough to get you license or could be using public transit. Worst come to worst even a cab would work.

take the bus arrange a pick up WALK!! but plea se e go. this kind of thing doesn't happen to everyone!

Ride a bus or taxi, since you're being paid. Or get a bike. Hell, could even walk if you want to do it bad enough. The only one truley stopping you from doing this, is you.

Her not driving you has nothing to do with "letting you intern" why is she supposed to drive you to work? "helping you" means driving you the one time a month you miss the bus.
