Today, my mother won't let me intern at a prestigious college, working with graduate students and professors, and being paid, because she doesn't want to drive me. FML

Great opportunity to get your license perhaps?

Is there no other way to get there? Perhaps a bus, or bike, if not too far? There has to be a way no?

This sounds pretty whiney to me, why do you expect your mom to drive you everywhere? My mom sure as hell wouldn't drive me to work and back everyday, even when I had a night job with no public transport available I had to get a bicycle to make my own way there. If this is a paid job then you'll have money for another method of transport, be it public transport or your own vehicle. It's time to grow up and stop relying on parents for everything.

To bad in order for it to be a paid job OP needs a way to get there in the first place. Their mother could at least drive them there until OP gets the first pay check and can find another way to get there.

I feel you. I have had to pass up many things for not being able to drive too. For all of you that say get a license. It isn't that easy!! Getting a license card is easy. It's the car and insurance part that stops people like me and OP.

My first car was old, ugly, and worth less than $1000. You can often get a clunker that will get you from point A to point B for a few hundred. Based on the way the FML was stated, it doesn't seem like OP actually needs the job for money to get by. Take the bus for a while, and save paychecks to get the car and pay insurance. Also, I got my first job at 14. If my parents couldn't drive me, I found a ride some way.

@38 It's illegal to employ anyone under the age of 16 in California unless it's a small, family owned (your family) business.

@132 not necessarily. I started working when I was 15 and they also hired 14 year olds there, which is the youngest you can be. This was in CA. There are just a lot of restrictions, so most places don't bother. But this place was a retirement home and we served meals, so each shift was 3 hours or less, and we has to clock out by 8 pm on school days. And you need a work permit of course, and they're a little stricter on your grades when you're below 16 too. But it wasn't a family owned place, it was just a regular company.

If you're old enough to get an internship, your mom shouldn't have to shoulder the responsibility of your transportation. You said you're being paid, so you should be able to find a way to get there.

OP isn't getting paid because their mother wont let them accept the internship in the first place.

Then get your license? I see an easy solution to the problem here.

OP might have their license already but not a car, which means they would still need to use their mother's, which by the looks of the FML wouldn't happen either.

Then take the bus? if they want to work there bad enough they'll find a way.

Where there's a will there's a way! That's a great opportunity that many people wouldn't get in a lifetime and you definitely don't need to let it waste away because your mom doesn't see the benefits in driving you there.

If it's at a college there should be at least an adequate bus system. Either get a bus pass, get your license, or get a bike. If it's that important you'll find a way, it's not your mom's responsibility to get you to your job.

Sounds like you're making excuses because you're scared, understandable but don't blame missing out on that on your mother

Welp. Time to figure out how to use public transportation.

Opportunity not to me missed.. Think mom needs to get her priorities right.. If it was my kid I'd defo drive them!! Isn't that what parents are suppose to do??

Parents are supposed to raise their kids to be self-sufficient, productive adults. Parents are not supposed to do every little thing for the kid so he never learns responsibility. Like most others have said, there is public transportation. If OP is smart enough to land such a prestigious internship, they should be smart enough to figure out how to get there.

There's something called walking and getting a vehicle......
