Today, my mum dismissed my diagnosed schizophrenia as "too much time with those earphones in". FML

Show her to a doctor, it sounds like she has a case of being an idiot.

Awesome!! Now we know for certain all those other schizofrenics are lying assholes! Except they're not. Your mom is.

And sometimes moms don't know better.....

It's that little screen you keep looking at!

She's just jealous that the voices aren't talking to her.

The best thing you can do is print off information and give it to her to read so she knows it is NOT too much time with headphones. If she refuses to change her mind, she's just ignorant, sorry. I hope she does understand.

I am sorry. Parents can really suck when it comes to understanding mental illnesses.

Don't you just love the way society treats mental illness? It's so much fun explaining to people that depressed people can't just "go do something that makes you happy!" That social phobia is not just a matter of "No, really no one cares what you're doing don't worry!" And that any form of mental illness is not "all in your head, so just buck up and get over it" Just because it's in your head doesn't mean it isn't real. Last I checked memory loss was 'in your head' and that's real. Brain cancer is real. Chemical imbalances in the brain are real, just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't doing harm. You can't see thyroid levels being off just by looking at a person, you can't pass someone on the street and know "oh, they're diabetic". Body chemistry is complex and when things are off kilter people are miserable. The stigma really needs to end.

I hate it when parents try to diagnose.

Same here. I see a councilor and he can testify I am mentally sound but my mom is certain something is wrong with me because I manage my stress differently than she does. (She freaks out and uses the nervous energy to get things done.)

Schizophrenia is a serious condition which requires medication and supplemented with therapy. I hope you are old enough to get these things or have your dr/psychiatrist explain the condition to her. I have bipolar disorder, which is near as bad as schizo, so I know how hard it can be
