Curly vs. straight is determined by codominance. CC is curly, SS is straight, and CS is wavy. Nothing to do with the mother's side. At some point in human history, red hair was a mutation. Now it's just a trait like any other.

Genes can be weird. I got all of the nondominant genes (light hair, skin and eyes) in the presence of dominant genes from my dad's side (dark hair and eyes). My mom's parents and brother were redheads, she's blonde, like some of her other family members. Your child could have gotten it from relatives on either side-a weird gene that skipped your generation but made it to theirs. Oh, and #190 SuperDud14, he's referring to the fact that he doesn't think it's HIS son, and his wife cheated on him with a redhead.
