Today, our company was being visited by one of our biggest clients, a rich Japanese businessman. My boss wanted to honour him by welcoming him while wearing a kimono in the reception area of our building. The client was in a suit and tie, and I don't think he'll be back. FML

The problem is your boss forgot to offer sushi and challenge the client to a katana duel. Great, I posted this twice. Thanks phone. Sorry, can't delete this. Just downvote it

The problem is your boss forgot to offer sushi and challenge the client to a katana duel. He was obviously offended by this.

this is why you should always be yourself, because you never know who may or may not be offended, even if you're trying to be open minded to what they do.

Why is this "**** *Your* Life"? Was it your business? Did you dress in the kimono?

If anyone here watches The Office U.S, I hope you'll agree with me when I say that sounds like something Michael Scott would do.

The first thing that came into my mind was if his boss was Michael Scott

I'm trying to remember the name of Michael's Chinese character. I think it was Ping

Is your boss a man or a woman? Because if it's a man that changes the tone of the FML quite a lot!

why not. u both complimented each other by donning each others cultural attire.

Maybe you could've gifted the client some Pokémon dolls to make up for the kimono fail.

I live and work in Japan, and I don't know any Japanese person who would be offended by this. Amused? Very possibly, but if the gesture was sincere then they'd be telling their friends the story months. Would it help you win Japanese business? Unlikely, unless you boss also spoke Japanese very well.

Relevant and very well explained in a considered manner. Thanks for beating me to the punch. I'm not Japanese, but I can wrap my head around some of the culture.

Maybe the guy thought he was being condescending. if you're there for serious business and feel your host is making a lame attempt, it might seem like time to bail

Does your boss happen to be Michael Scott of the Dunder Mifflin paper company?

How is this a 'fyl' situation? it doesn't directly affect you in any way. Your boss on the other hand yes.
