Today, the nine year old girl I was babysitting got the hiccups, so I told her to drink some water upside down to cure them. She ended up vomiting on the floor. FML

All these people with either silly "cures" for hiccups or hopelessness. The reason you get hiccups is because your rib muscles and diaphragm (the primary muscles for breathing) get out of sync. To fix it you just have to get those muscles re-syncronized, which isn't actually all that hard because you do have conscious control over those muscles, you just probably aren't accustomed to paying attention to them. As a trained opera singer (who frequently gets hiccups) I just have to pay attention to breathing properly for a minute and the problem is solved. For beginning vocalists, hiccups are an opportunity to test if you understand breathing for singing. If you aren't a vocalist, holding your breath or taking deep breaths are things to try that have a high chance of success. You could also try inhaling like you're trying to expand like a blowfish and exhaling slowly a few times.

That never works. Holding your breath is the best way and there's no risk of barfing. I'm going to say you did this to yourself.

Just drink water you don't have to be upside down (always works for me)

Aww at least nothing bad happened to her and you ended up laughing about it?and it cured her hiccups!

I eat peanut butter when I have them. Water never works for me.

There's like dozens of ways to stop hiccups and you choose the one that requires the most skill and effort why?

Get them to hold your hand, tell them to look deep and sensually into your eyes, and to squeeze your hand every time they feel like they'll hiccup.

I use that method all the time, it's a great one
