Today, we had to discuss our heritage at school. When I told the class that I'm German, Japanese, and of the Jewish faith, my teacher laughed at the "irony." Something like this always happens whenever I tell people my background. FML

And then complain about something. get the Jew side in there.

due same thing only I'm part jewish, part German. what makes it even more ironic is I have blonde hair and blue eyes.

You could have been an SS member until they had you drop your pants for the physical

That's not ironic at all. Lots of Germans have blonde hair and blue eyes, including myself. I'm a quarter German-Jewish and a quarter Russian-Jewish. And the other side is a mix of a bunch of European countries, like France and England. :/

A lot of natural blonde blue eyed Jews were killed in Germany. Some were lucky enough to use it to their advantage and pretend they weren't Jewish if they got the proper faked papers. If was actually a common occurance. It's a major misconception saying Jews aren't blonde. Hitler-fail. But yeah I can imagine how today people would notice that about you

I'm not laughing at you because of your heritage. I would laugh if you were also gay

That's awesome! I love hearing about different cultures. Everybody has a story to tell.(:

I wish I knew someone like that.. :(

Who cares what everyone else thinks or says? Be proud of who you are!

Firstly, your teacher is a dick. Secondly, the German/Jewish ancestry isn't that weird, because - well - the Jews who were persecuted in Germany, were mostly Germans. Those that left as refugees would almost by definition have been both German and Jewish. Oh, and of course, there are Jews in modern day Germany too. I can see this comment section is going to be full of 'LOL Hitler' stuff, but do you think there is a chance that you might stop and think before you post? The streets of my town have memorial plaques out the front of the houses from which people were taken away to the concentration camps. This isn't an abstract concept for some people.

You're missing the clincher...poor Japan- everyone forgets they were in WWII, but just ask the good people if Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Also, OP's German and Jewish relatives could have gotten together after the war. AND with the same logic, the Japanese side could have been both imperial and placed in a US internment camp. Basically, it is entirely possible that each of the OP's grandparents had a significantly different reaction to VE and VJ days respectively.

I'm Australian. We don't forget that Japan was in WWII.

I believe you. I'm not even a teacher and it bothers me how little Americans know about their OWN history, let alone world history.

Climb off it, yanksby. Just because someone doesn't think it's unusual, doesn't mean they are unaware of history. As Zeb pointed out, being German and Jewish is not such a strange thing. The irony is only on the part of the ignorant. Adding Japanese to the mix doesn't make it any more ironic for me. I know many half-Japanese people and maybe a quarter of them claim German descent; I hadn't bothered to investigate their religions but I wouldn't be surprised if some were Jewish. The fact is that in the States, mixtures aren't all that uncommon.

So? I'm Apache, Mexican, French, Spanish, and Moroccan and it's really not a big deal. YDI if you're ashamed. Also, I agree with 59; chill with the history lessons already. Sheesh.
