Today, while I was working at a supermarket, a kid started to cry in line because he couldn't get candy. Since we have free lollipops behind the desk, I gave him one. His mom complained to my manager and said I was grooming her child. FML

While the mom overreacted, she may have had a reason for not giving him candy. Better safe than sorry and ask.

You are kind of encouraging brattiness when you do that. YDI

That poor kid, I see a life of hell ahead of him.

We must not be reading the same FML if you see a life of hell for that kid when I don't.

Most of these comments are ******* stupid, the OP never said why the kid couldn't have candy.. For all we know his mother might not have had the money.

The kid was crying in public over not getting candy. That's a fit. If you give a kid what they want while they are throwing a fit, they will just keep doing that and won't learn that it isn't okay. They will grow up to be spoiled brats if it keeps going. Doesn't matter if it was a money issue or not. Mom said no and the kid got it anyway. I'd file a complaint too, just not one as harsh as the mom did.

You must be a guy. Mothers wouldnt do that if it was a woman because "women cant be sexual predators"

I do agree with her complaint. The mom was not getting her child candy for a reason, and you showed her he can be disrespectful and get what he wants anyway because he was crying and you felt sympathetic for him. In my opinion, YDI.

No. It is never okay to accuse someone of wanting to harm a child... when they made a stupid mistake. There was a guy who was taking a selfie and the Mom accused him of snapping perv shots. She went on a campaign to ruin this guys life. He got threatened. When he proved he wasn't taking pictures at all, he still has his life slandered because of it. What the mother had a right to do is complain. "Your employee gave my child candy when I said no. I find that very dangerous and just wanted to say something." Then you move on. Op might have overreached, but giving a kid candy isn't the worst crime in the world.

you totally deserved it. you never give candy to children without parental permission. you basically awarded his temper tantrum.

Uhhhh kids are brats why the hell would you do that? Just encouraging them to be more of a brat basically by giving them what they want

maybe the kid is diabetic?? or he just have one of those cop moms

Mom overreacted on the whole "grooming" thing but this is pretty YDI. If a parent isn't giving candy to their child, it's not your place to step in and do it. Especially if said kid is crying. Then you're just rewarding the child for bad behavior and the parent is going to have to work that much harder to break the habit. Your heart may have been in the right place, but next time ask the parent first before giving a kid candy.

And the kud will remeber strangers might give them candy....bad choice really

YDI, don't contradict the parent unless she's being legitimately abusive. All you have done is encourage brattiness

Idiot. If I was that mother I would have wanted to kill you. For giving crap to my child, for enforcing bad behavior, for undermining mother's authority. She simply did next mean but legal thing short of killing you. Hope you have your records messed up now.
