Today, while I was working at a supermarket, a kid started to cry in line because he couldn't get candy. Since we have free lollipops behind the desk, I gave him one. His mom complained to my manager and said I was grooming her child. FML

While the mom overreacted, she may have had a reason for not giving him candy. Better safe than sorry and ask.

You are kind of encouraging brattiness when you do that. YDI

Every false accusation makes it that much harder for real rape and pedophilia victims to come forward. That woman is a worthless human being, regardless of whether or not the OP should have asked first.

The kid might have been diabetic or had other health problems that prevent him from eating candy. YDI.

I don't know about grooming him, but ask next time just to be on the safe side

Nice gesture but you don't know the reason why the mom said no. You should always ask before giving something to a child. You don't quite deserve it but you did play your part OP

Ydi. You undermined the parent & encouraged the kid's behavior.

Ydi if he couldn't get candy his mom had a reason not to. Should've asked the parent first or not do it at all

Just let the kid cry. The child needed to learn he can't get everything he wants.

You should have asked. It's undermining what the parent is doing with their child. Obviously, he or she was throwing a tantrum.

You definitely deserved that one. If you knew he couldn't have candy then you over stepped your boundaries by giving him one. When I was a cashier I never let kids hold on to any candy until I got the okay from the parents.

I'm sorry but as a mum, I hate it when someone enables my kids misbehaviour. My son has ASD and it's extremely important that he has consistency and boundaries. It's not always a money issue, sometimes it's just no you're not having that and that's final. Not your kid, not your place.
