Actually most of the responses are wrong in today's commonly accepted training. Positive reinforcement when going outside is more effective than negative reinforcement ever is. I housetrain strays at a shelter. Not that I always follow that, but I do know that is most effective. Negative reinforcement at any point will just make them pee/poo where they think you won't find it. The dog should learn that pee/poo is good, but only in the right place.
what's up with fml.. my comments are not posting. even after it says sucess! comment posted. Lol
^^ success ^^ Damn finally

So? Rub his nose through it, call him a "bad dog" and get him house trained. Not an FML reallt
That's unsanitary. :/ Why do people think rubbing dogs noses in it helps? You're just getting shit on your dogs face and a chance of making him sick. Read a book on dog training, it will help you not look ignorant next time you talk about them. I'm not sure how old you are, but I guess rubbing dogs noses in it was popular 20 years ago, but training ideals have changed a lot since then and become a lot more humane and successful. There are better, kinder ways of getting your dog to behave the way you want it. You know they used to train horses by tying their feet up off the ground and forcing them to sit in an uncomfortable position for hours at end? And swing dogs around on the end of a choke-collar, and beat them into submission? Just like beating your kids. It's old and wrong.
Animal posts on this site always make me sad. There are so many bad, stupid, or ignorant owners. For the record, the OP actually pretty much did everything right, except maybe take the dog out on time. But I know that my dog, while generally on a shit-schedule, sometimes has to poop twice, or more, or doesn't poop at all when she usually does. You're supposed to interrupt/startle the dog while it's starting to poop/pee inside, and then get it outside immediately (even if it's already done its business all over the floor) and praise heavily when it does its business outside. You do NOT, EVER rub the dogs nose in it, or yell at it or punish it for something after the fact. You either need to catch the dog in the act or blame yourself for being too slow and let the dog get away with it until you can catch it in the act later. It takes less than 3 days for a dog to understand being housebroken (and your carpet WILL get soiled during this time, no matter what you do, it will just happen, so have some cleaner on hand), unless it has previously been allowed to potty inside, in which case a change of rules is going to confuse it and it's going to be a longer struggle, but it's doable.
What a coincidence, OP! LMAO! My roommate's dog took a HUGE dump on the carpet just outside of the bathroom yesterday. Apparently she was upset, because no one was paying attention to her. The funny thing about it was that he had just taken out, so she could do her business.
you should poo outside and let your dog watch. maybe he'll learn where to go take a dookie. monkey see monkey do.
