Hey, about all the phone/email comments. Often when someone goes backpacking they go sort of ascetic and some people completely abandon all modern conveniences. At the very least, he wouldn't have had a constant place of contact. He probably didn't have a cell, and if he did, I have a feeling when you take off to Europe for a year you're getting away from something. That being said, FYL.

I may be reading too much into it, but I think that was supposed to be that last little bit of redeeming humor so readers don't get too depressed that people usually include at the end of their FMLs. Or the punch line.
