This is a sad, sad world. I guess no adults should talk to kids at the risk of being labeled a pedophile. Parents need a wake up call. The more they make a big deal out of this, the worse it will get. It's taking "don't talk to strangers" to the extreme. Kids will adopt this behavior. They will believe that all adults are going to hurt them. Too much fear makes parents irrational.
Stranger danger! Stranger danger! Nah, it's been proven in research and statistics that generally strangers aren't that dangerous. The people who generally hurt kids are adults the kid knows. Nothing wrong with someone cheering up a little girl with a compliment. If I had that happen when I was a kid, my mom would probably have been happy-I've always been a shy kid, so my parents have always tried to encourage me to talk to people I don't know to build up my social skills. And being called a 'princess' once doesn't make a little girl believe she should have everything in the world. I had trouble growing up figuring out what princess meant, since I grew up with the term 'Disney princess'. Which more meant a heroine who was brave and kind-not that she was a genuine princess in the royal sense. (I had arguments sometimes, because some people specify royal princesses and I always meant princess in the sense that Disney had taught me, so...) There was a little girl who was upset. A teen came over and complimented her. Little girl was happy. Maybe it WAS the mom's fault the girl was upset, though....
Girls can be pedos to ya know! But yea. Thats a bit harsh....
Sounds like one o those bitch parents..
And then we wonder why there are so many unfriendly and inconsiderate people in this world. Thanks to the fear-mongering media (at least in large part), people have been conditioned to live in their own corner of the universe where they are safe and everyone outside is out to get them. And, sadly, many of these people are now old enough to reproduce and pass on that ideology. Hopefully this child has some other influence in her life to balance out the mother's obvious lack of manners and common sense.
God, I hate the world we live in today. Anytime anybody tries to interact with a child in ANY way, even if it's a compliment, they get called a pedo. God I hate the media.
Honestly OP, you deserve it. Parents can be psycho protective of their kids and you don't know the circumstances. The kid could've been in a time-out situation (from parental attention) as punishment for throwing a tantrum 2 minutes earlier. Or maybe that's just how her face looks.

Well, you tried.
I would've then asked the mom if she was a wicked witch, because she was being a bitch.
