Awkward small talk

Today, a customer brought her kids into the store where I work. I like to make people laugh, so being my usual joking self I kidded, "Why aren't those kids in school?" She didn't laugh when she said that their house burned down the night before and the kids had no clothes to wear to school. FML

Looking at a six year old and going, "Wait, I thought college started today!" is funny. Asking, "Shouldn't they be in school?" is going to come across as nosy and/or passive-aggressive (or passive-snarky), even if you do it with a smile. YD a retort for your poor judgement, though FYL for the coincidence of the fire. @6: Their house burnt down the night before, they're going to be a little traumatized. I think they deserve the day off.

Do you guys ever think they were wearing the cloths they had on the day before!! And no one should ever be so negative about fires none of you have had experiences with one so why judge? .. They were at the store to buy food because they had none and they have probably a hotel room to store their food in!! I know exactly what they did because my whole town burnt down. And is still not re-built after 2 years So some of you need to shut your mouths. Your not still living in a camper. With a family of 5

Anyone ever hear of service with a smile?

It sucks to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and not realize it. My house burned down when I was younger. I had to show up to school in a borrowed shirt from my aunt that said "lucky" with a dollar sign below it when I was eleven. The kids who didn't know what had happened took that opportunity full force. At least you were only doing it in jest without intending harm.

At the end of the day, she's still your daughter. Everyone makes mistakes! Accept her for what she's done and who she is!
